DA SHAN ZI
Da Shan
Zi is the name of a peculiarly nostalgic early 1950’s
communist industrial compound dominated by large and
spacious Bauhaus factories that are spread over an area
of over one million square meters now hosting one of the
most flourishing contemporary art scenes in China. The
Maoist factories that once symbolized the idealistic
utopia of total equality and communal effort have
transformed into one of the most powerful symbols of
individual expression in the Chinese mainland. The
fading socialist slogans on the walls look as if they
are about to take their last breath before they
disappear for ever. The feeling of modernity and new
vitality are in such stark contrast with the old
machinery and the rusty worn-out chimneys, that one
inevitably feels the apparent irony that is deeply
imbedded in the history of modern China.
Using
the original features of the functional, minimalist and
clean Bauhaus architecture many of the Da Shan Zi
factories have been transformed into extremely
impressive galleries. The area of Da Shan Zi district
has an undisputable aesthetic appeal to visitors coming
to enjoy art, but more importantly it is the place where
Chinese contemporary art is establishing itself as an
active member of the global art scene.
The Da Shan Zi district, also known as “
factory 798”, hosts over == galleries and other
businesses related to art and design it is also the
place where the month long Da Shan Zi art festival is
hosted yearly around may. The Da Shan Zi galleries
exhibit a wide selection of China’s finest contemporary
art, offering an insightful look into the world of
Chinese contemporary aesthetics, its leading artists and
the very distinct cultural traces that are so apparent
in their works. |
